ART CLASS DAY 19: BRIT & CO CALLIGRAPHY

Like many of us crafty types, I’m obsessed with the design aesthetic of Brit+Co, so when they opened up a retail shop in their offices in downtown San Francisco a few years back, I had to sign up to take a few classes as part of my 30 days of art class challenge.

The first class I took at Brit+Co was an intro to calligraphy, with the fabulous Bri of Brown Fox Calligraphy. Like many of the lettering classes I’ve taken, it was filled with mostly ladies.

About the Space

The Brit+Co space is beautiful, their offices are near Union Square and they have  a lovely and unique gardeny front yard in front of the retail space. I think their corporate offices are in the same building, so I can only imagine working in such a prime space.

About the Class

When I arrived, I was excited to see that our instructor, Bri of Brown Fox Calligraphy, had put together a little introductory calligraphy kit for everyone. It included some of her favorite tools, including a pad of Rhodia paper (which has been recommended by other calligraphers as well) and some black and white ink.

Bri led us through a modern calligraphy alphabet – both upper and lower case. It was fun to practice letters with a group of people, especially since we were all beginners. Bri & Brown Fox Calligraphy offer classes from time to time, I’d highly recommend if you’re looking to learn. Warning: They fill up fast!
