I’m up to day 7 into my 30 day project – day seven of art class was “DIY Cheeseboard Wood Burning Class” at Brit + Co’s company headquarters in downtown San Francisco.

Brit + Co is a curious company – they’re sort of a millennial Martha Stewart. They post tutorials, sell arts and crafts and teach classes. As far as I can tell, Brit & Co hasn’t started teaching classes in “real life” in other cities yet, but I’d highly recommend checking out their classes if you’re in San Francisco. The vibe is super modern and creative and it was fun to craft with other people for a few hours.

The wood burning class was very chill, mostly self-directed. We were all given kits and some basic directions, Brit + Co sells the kits for the wood burning cheese board on their site (here’s the directions). The kit included the wood cutting board, a practice piece, a wood burning tool with 4 bit attachments and alphabet bit attachments.

After searching online for some inspiration, I found this nature-inspired cheese board on Zulily. I sketched it out onto the test board with pencil and then traced over it with the wood burning pen. After working out the spacing, I sketched it onto the cheese board, took a deep breath, and started burning it in.

Wood burning turned out to be really fun and it smelled like a camp fire. Next time I’d like to try using the letters to brand some words into the wood.
